Documenting Black History in Augmented Reality (AR)
The "Unbreakable" AR exhibit, designed by celebrated artist Anthony W. Phills, represents a significant innovation in the way we engage with Black history. This premier installation offers a unique augmented reality tour that invites users to immerse themselves in the experiences of African individuals during the antebellum period in America. The exhibit features two main components: the Statue of Cudjoe Kazoola Lewis and an immersive tour featuring an enslaved individual alongside a slaveholder, available in select cities across the United States and beyond.
- Statue: Cudjoe Kazoola Lewis
This section of the exhibit showcases a meticulously crafted 3D AR representation of Cudjoe Lewis, one of the last known survivors of the Atlantic slave trade. The experience is augmented by a concise ninety-second audio narrative that recounts his life story, accessible when visitors approach within 1.5 feet of the AR figure. - Tour: Enslaved Person with Slaveholder
This AR experience offers audiences a deep, engaging look at historical dynamics from a new vantage point. Starting in cities such as New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Washington DC, Chicago, New Orleans, Miami, Dallas, Kentucky, and Alabama, participants can navigate around life-sized AR representations of an enslaved person and their slaveholder. This immersive journey allows for a profound understanding of the historical context, enriched by Anthony’s striking visual and auditory storytelling.
In pursuit of continuous historical education through immersive experiences, I am currently seeking support for my upcoming project, the "Clotilda Slave Ship" exhibition. This initiative aims to enhance understanding of the past by recreating the conditions aboard one of these ships, enabling audiences to empathize with the lived experiences therein.
This exhibition aspires not only to educate but also to instill a sense of resilience in younger generations by connecting them with the history of their ancestors and emphasizing the importance of contemporary human rights issues. We envision making this project a recurring educational experience rather than a singular event, aiming to reach youth in urban areas worldwide.
To maximize accessibility, we intend to offer this AR experience for free download, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to engage with African and Black history meaningfully. We seek support from community members and advocates who recognize the significance of enhancing collective understanding through immersive learning opportunities.
